PASTORAL MESSAGE FOR CHRISTMAS-2024

My dear brothers and sisters:

We are all pilgrims in this life. We move forward on our daily journeys by doing our work, having a little fun, taking on challenges. We don't walk alone. We choose a few fellow travelers. We also rub shoulders with colleagues, strangers, people who are more or less like us, with whom we get along more or less well. We are obliged to walk together. But do we know where we are going?

So many people in our world are forced to go where they don't want to go. Today, there are millions of refugees forced into exile for political, economic, social or ethnic reasons. They wander around, looking for a place to stop, where to pitch a tent, where to find work.

Joseph and Mary took the road to Bethlehem for social reasons: they had to obey the Roman emperor who demanded that everyone be registered in their city of origin. Many of them bowed to the emperor's whims because when they arrived in Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph discovered that the village was already crowded. Joseph and Mary were very similar to today's refugees.

Yet their hearts were overflowing with hope. They were aware that the child that Mary carried in her womb would transform the world by bringing it an unexpected light, a warmth, a love.

Jesus also became a pilgrim when he chose to go to all the villages and cities of Palestine to proclaim the Good News of God the Saviour, close to the little ones and the humble. He wanted to sow this hope in all hearts so that as they walked, people would also have the desire to sing, to converse, to help and encourage each other.

In this new year, let us be "Pilgrims of hope." Like Joseph and Mary, let us not be afraid to return to the path of life every day that is given to us. Let's move forward with those we love... and all the others we don't love enough. Let us nourish hope in our hearts, let us radiate hope for our world.

Yes, we are all pilgrims in this life. Let us also be pilgrims who bring hope to the world!

Ad Iesum per Mariam,

+ Michel Joseph, O.S.B.
